Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) is synthesized in the brain, liver and kidney. ALC facilitates the uptake of acetylCoA into the mitochondria, and enhances acetylcholine production. It readily crosses the blood-brain barrier, and enhances neuronal metabolism in the mitochondria. Alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine (GPC) increases the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and facilitates learning and memory, and is known to support cognitive function, mood and behavior. Data also indicates that GPC use can increase serum growth hormone post resistance exercise. Ginkgo biloba supplies ginkgo-flavone glycosides. Standardized to 24% flavonoid glycosides, Ginkgo extract provides antioxidant activity, supports membrane stabilization, and enhanced utilization of oxygen and glucose, thereby supporting mitochondrial respiration. It also positively impacts the vascular endothelium, and has been demonstrated to improve mental performance in the elderly, and has shown marked beneficial effect on mood, memory and intellectual efficiency. Cognitive Enhancer also supplies Huperzine A (HupA), a sesquiterpene alkaloid which functions as a powerful acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It allows for a readily available source of acetylcholine for use in the brain. HupA has been demonstrated to enhance memory in students, as well as the elderly, and possesses the added benefits of antioxidant and neuroprotective properties.
