Biotics Research's Phosphatidylserine is a supplemental source of this important phospholipid which is a structural part of biologic membranes. Phosphatidylserine is involved in signal transduction activity, and may positively impact cognition.

Phosphatidylserine (PS), a naturally occurring phospholipid nutrient, is a component of cell membranes and serves as an essential constituent in the functioning of all cells. PS is most concentrated in organs with high metabolic activity including the brain, lungs, heart, liver and skeletal muscle. As a key component of myelin, PS makes up a major part of the phospholipid concentration of the brain, and may offer support for optimal brain function. PS is also found in high concentrations in the retina and, is thought to play an important role in both vision and the nervous system. Referred to as a “brain nutrient”, PS intake has been shown to significantly improve memory and cognitive function, and prevent “winter blues” in a pre-post comparison. PS fosters hormonal balance, particularly with athletes, by blunting increases in the stress hormone, cortisol. In addition to its support of brain, nervous system, immune system, visual, hormonal and emotional health, recent data shows PS also supports cardiovascular health.

PS may attenuate some of the negative neuronal effects of aging. No food sources, except brain, contain phosphatidylserine. Although the body is able to synthesize PS, supplementation may become necessary to retain vital levels of this nutrient, particularly as levels decrease with age.
